Top 5 Reactions When People Realize I Used to Wrestle

Noah Nelms's Blog | Top 5 Reactions When People Realize I Used to Wrestle

One of my favorite parts about working in car sales is meeting new people every single day. Everyone’s got a story — but sometimes, when people find out my story, the reactions are absolutely priceless.

Yep, believe it or not, I used to be a professional wrestler.
And not just local shows — I wrestled on national TV with AEW.

Here are the top five reactions I get when that little fact comes up on the lot 👇

1. The “No Way, You’re Lying!” Reaction

This one’s the most common.
People look me up and down and say, “You? A wrestler? No way.”
Then they grab their phone and start Googling. About 10 seconds later, their jaw drops and they go, “WAIT. I remember you!”
That’s usually when the fun starts — and they pull up a clip or two.

2. The “Show Me the Video!” Reaction

These are my favorite.
People get genuinely excited, like they just ran into a superhero at the grocery store. They’ll say, “Hold on, hold on — I gotta see this!”
Next thing I know, we’re standing next to an F-150 watching me get thrown across a ring on YouTube.
(Definitely not your typical car-buying moment.)

3. The “I Actually Met You Once!” Reaction

Every so often, someone will pull out their camera roll and show me a photo we took together years ago at a show.
It’s wild seeing those old memories pop back up — different cities, same energy.
Those moments usually turn into a really good conversation, and it breaks the ice in the best way possible.

4. The “Cool Story, Anyway…” Reaction

Then there are the people who just… don’t care.
I’ll mention wrestling, and they’ll give me a polite nod and go, “Nice. So what kind of gas mileage does this get?” 😂
Not everyone’s a wrestling fan — and that’s totally fine. I’ve learned to roll with it.

5. The “So… Can You Body Slam My Friend?” Reaction

There’s always that one person in the group who thinks it’d be funny to ask if I’ll body slam their buddy for a discount.
It’s all in good fun, and I just laugh and tell them I retired those moves for good. (Though, to be fair, I’ve heard worse negotiation tactics.)

No matter what reaction I get, it’s always a great reminder that the world’s smaller than we think — and people love connecting through stories.
Whether they’re a wrestling fan or just someone looking for a new ride, it’s cool to see how those past experiences still help me build relationships today.

At the end of the day, I may have traded in the ring for a car lot…
But the goal’s still the same: make people smile and give them something they’ll remember.
